"Why not me? When you see people be great, and achieve a lot of success, at some point they said, “why note me”, so if you can’t believe that you’re going to be successful, you can’t expect anybody else to believe that” – “Everything in life is connected, every little thing is connected, so I think that when things happen in your life, if you look at them as coincidences or random things and you’re not looking for that connection, sometimes it becomes hard to grow from your mistakes. Because there’s always a pattern of things” – “Dealing with adversity, a big part of it is the story that you tell yourself, and so being able to tell yourself the right story, is just an important part of good mental health” – “the most important thing for anyone pursuing success, by far and away, is to be in a place where they are happy with themselves” – “Gratitude is a very very important component of having a positive attitude” – “I’m not in control. I can’t force my way into my desired outcome. You can do your best, you can make the best decisions out of the inputs that you have, and sometimes you make bad decisions. You just have to be ok with not being in control. In some ways it can be scary but in other ways it’s very freeing” – “There are certain things that are pre-requisites to being successful, that I found in my life, call it on a secular basis. Those are things like having professional pride, understanding that you’re your own brand, that your output is what you’re going to be accountable for, the difference between being output oriented or result oriented. You really need to understand how to move the needle in whatever you are pursuing, but at the same time you should also understand that it’s very hard to see the forest from the trees and you should always question yourself and ask yourself whether you’re able to see it. When you’re humble enough to tell yourself that you clearly can’t, then you start opening yourself up to the world of possibilities that life is going to take you, and the direction that life is going to take you” - Thank you Hashem - Joey Newcomb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Byo7t9hJXG4

“I saw that if you want to do something, get the right equipment, put the time in, you train several times a week, you can start winning some of these things” – “There was a period in my life when training and competing was number one” – “no matter what happens, just keep going, do your best, don’t worry. If I’m seventh I’m gonna try to get sixth, if I’m second I’m gonna try to win, and if I’m winning I’m gonna try to hold that position. I think I’ve had a lot of success by not giving up” – “Anybody that has been successful has had ups and downs” – “People tend to perform at their best when they are happy. If you’re happy, you’re probably going to perform better than if you’re angry, or feeling bad” – “Find something that you’re passionate about, and then do it. The hardest step is the first one” – “I think I had decent DNA, but I think there’s a lot of people out there in my sport that had a lot more natural talent than I did and didn’t get nearly as far. My success was probably 80% mental dedication and 20% natural DNA. I think you’ll see that natural ability will take you so far, but the people at the upper level will always have that drive and that motivation” – “The best time to plan a tree was 20 years ago, and the second best time is now”.

“I’m always trying to move things forward” – “I really want to do this so I’m just gonna do it!” – “My limitation is my own mind, and really if you break any task down into smaller task it becomes so much more manageable and then it’s just small things to cross off a list to get to your big goal” – “Don’t limit yourself, you can think big, and you can probably figure out a way to get there”.

“I’ve never been afraid of hard work in my life, in fact I relish it, if there’s a project to manage or something to do, I’m ready to tackle it, so my only reaction to what “Star” (Ian’s wife) told me was “he** yeah bring it on, let’s do this, whatever I need to do, if there’s something I need to do let’s do it” – “I developed this philosophy that I called “inch-by-inch” – “Every single day you have to want to beat the stroke more than the stroke wants to beat you down” – “If you look at any forest of trees, and you want to get through it, and you tell your brain “Don’t look at the trees”, all that you’re gonna see are the trees. But if you tell your brain “look at the path through the forest”, then you will see the path through the forest. You have to see the way through, and not look at the obstacles” – “Before you can do it you have to visualize you can do it”.

“my nickname was the baby that feels no pain” – “things can change really fast, you need to pay attention” – “the motto that stuck with me over the years is Have a purpose, not a plan. The purpose is what you are trying to achieve, the plan is how you achieve it” – “Life is short, whether you take it or you get hit by a bus, anything can happen any day. There’s no guaranty we’re here tomorrow. What am I going to do with my life to make my life count for me, and the other people around me” – “This looks like a road block, this looks like an obstacle, it seems that something has happened to you. You can ask yourself, how is this happening for me? How is this an opportunity for me? Reframing it, instead of a “to”, but a “for”, something of service to you, that really can help” – “I find that the best truth in life are paradoxes, the world is both big and small at the same time” – “what would you do if it was up to you?” – “listen to what you are naturally drawn to, and create some space for it”

“I was in the race. It was all about the future. It’s not about the past or the present moment. I was chasing the future, thinking that when you get to the future, everything would be perfect.” – “kids only know one language, and that language is called love” – “If I’m not happy doing this thing, why should I do it? Why would I make myself suffer? This is how we are creating suffering for ourselves. When we are not happy doing the things that we are doing, we transmit an energy field that is of suffering and pain, and stress, and anxiety and worry. And this energy field is also a gift that we share with the people that we meet, we are sharing this energy field at the unconscious level” – “if you feel joyous, fun, ecstatic doing certain things, that means you’re heading in the right direction” – “most people get stuck because they think “how”, When you make a decision and you don’t care about the how, the universe will give you the answer” – “Discipline is giving yourself a command, and not giving yourself the choice, giving yourself a command and follow it” – “known misery is always preferred than the unknown bliss” – “trusting existence and taking small risks” – “There will be point when you have to fight the current, there will be point when you have to float” – “Gather courage and follow your passion” – and more.

“First lesson: Just say yes. Say yes to something, even if you don’t know what to expect from that decision. Saying yes always brings something to you” – “I wanted to discover something that others didn’t know about” – “I’m a very regular guy, I’m not a huge guy, I don’t have the crazy endurance and everything, but if I decide something and if I really give myself the mean to do it, then I’m going to do it” – “I want this, it’s gonna last 5 seconds, but for these 5 seconds I’m able to work hours and hours and hours and put my mind to it” – “First it’s a dream, then it’s how do I do it, and then it’s obvious that I’m going to do it, I have to do it” – “all the things surrounding the project, are bigger than the project itself” - “your life is not a room service, your life is to say yes and to see what happens when you say yes”.

“I always thought that the best coaches were tough, but very fair. They weren’t asking something you couldn’t do, they were just pushing you to a new level that they knew you could get to”, “I find that I can become a little bit lazy if I go (asking advice) to too many people and ask too many questions”, “whatever you’re doing, whatever you pursue, make sure it’s purposeful and important enough to you and meaningful to you because that’s the driver what will get you passed all those road blocks “, “question your resistance, there’s great learning on that as well”, “explore! Roam, and explore and keep your eyes open and pay attention and be alert as you go, internally, to what you’re feeling, and explore that world as well, explore your own internal worlds”.

"Ultimately, you are always competing with your own expectations", "Don’t be afraid to put your goal out there, tell people about, tell people what you’re gonna do, so then you are accountable, and that could be a good motivator". And more.
